Lamps backs Terry as skipper

Midfielder hails team-mate as 'monster of a captain'

Frank Lampard has given his support to John Terry as Fabio Capello considers who to make England captain.

Terry wears the armband for Chelsea and also skippered his country during Steve McClaren's time in charge.

With Terry sidelined, Capello named Steven Gerrard as captain for last month's 2-1 victory against Switzerland, his first match as England manager.

Lampard accepts that there a number of candidates but he believes Terry has all the necessary qualities.

"The manager will pick who he thinks is the best," Lampard told The Sun ahead of Wednesday's friendly with France.

"All I can say is that John Terry, on and off the pitch, is a monster of a captain.

"On the pitch he plays with the attitude that you want your captain to have.

He talks to people around him.

"Off the pitch he gets people to together and is a big personality in the dressing room.

"I can only give him a huge reference in those terms.

"Obviously, there are other candidates. We've got people who can be leaders but John is outstanding."
