Five qualifies for listed sports events

Five now has the right to cover protected sports such as the World Cup and Olympics after being given listed event status by Ofcom.

To achieve listed status a channel must be free to air and reach at least 95% of UK homes. Five requested it be added to the list after new availability figures showed it covered 96%.

Five now joins BBC One, BBC Two, ITV1 and Channel 4 as a service which "must be given a genuine opportunity to acquire the rights to broadcast listed events".

Effectively it means only these channels can win live coverage of listed events under Ofcom's Group A, which also include the European Football Championship and Wimbledon.

Group B sports, including cricket test matches, Six Nations rugby and the Commonwealth Games, are protected only for highlights shows.
