Get Ready for Galileo

This week, European Union ministers signed off on plans for Galileo, taking the planned satellite-based navigation system one step closer to reality.

Under plans approved by the European entity, the Galileo system is expected to be operational by 2013. During the deployment phase, which will take place during the next five years, those developing the system will build all space and ground-based infrastructure.

The system is expected to cost 3.4 billion euros ($5.34 billion U.S.).
