Alonso faster than Schumacher
German second-fastest in Ferrari test
Fernando Alonso outshone seven-time World Champion Michael Schumacher on the third day of testing in Barcelona.
Two-time Champion Alonso, who completed 100 laps, pushed his Renault to one minute 18.483 seconds at the Circuit de Catalunya. The time was only a fraction slower than the quickest time set by Ferrari's Felipe Massa on the first day of testing on Monday.
Alonso, whose R28 was sporting the new shark fin engine cover with the aim of improving aerodynamics, was almost one second quicker than Schumacher who was testing for Ferrari.
"The day has been good and I was happy with the developments to the car," Alonso said after testing.
"But we still need to keep improving because it seems that our competitors have also improved, so it is still difficult to say how we really compare with them.
"We have to wait until next week to get a full picture of where we stand, but it was fun to try the slick tyres, which gave very good grip."
Schumacher, though, won't be too disappointed with his efforts. The German finished second in a time of 01:19.323 just .101 ahead of Force India's Adrian Sutil.
BMW's Robert Kubica, Nico Rosberg of Williams and Rubens Barrichello in a Honda were fourth, fifth and sixth fastest respectively.
Lewis Hamilton finished a disappointing seventh, more than two seconds slower than Alonso.
