Webber tops soggy Barca test

Kovalainen in second

Australian Mark Webber took advantage of a drying track to top the timesheets on the final day of testing at Barcelona on Thursday.

The day began under grey skies and after seven of the eight drivers had set installation laps they were sent scurrying back to the pits to get out of the rain. The downpour led to minimal running during the morning session.

Once it stopped, though, the drivers hit the track and put in the mileage, all using Bridgestone's intermediate tyres.

Webber managed to set the best time of the day, a 1:21.953, as he took advantage of a dry line while Heikki Kovalainen finished in second place. The McLaren driver, though, was over a second and a half off Webber's fastest lap time.

Kimi Raikkonen, who opted to stay indoors for most of the morning session, only completed 34 laps, setting the third best time ahead of Robert Kubica and Jenson Button.

Red flag

Sixth place, and the only red flag of the day, went to Kazuki Nakajima, who stopped out on track late in the day when the Toyota engine power his Williams blew.

Nelson Piquet Jr and Jarno Trulli completed the timesheets.

"We knew that rain was forecast for today so we didn't expect to be able to make too much progress," said Trulli.

"When we finally did some running we put in a few laps of wet set-up but with the track changing so much it is always hard to draw too many conclusions. When we return here next week the conditions will be different again.

"But we have had some solid days of testing here this year so we can head into the race with confidence."
