Broad welcome for TV5 accord

April 30, 2008 – 12:17 BST

The board of directors at TV5 Monde have officially appointed Alain de Pouzilhac as chairman of the French-speaking channel. Marie-Christine Saragosse was appointed as director-general during the meeting on Tuesday afternoon while the current CEO Francois Bonnemain has tendered his resignation.

“TV5 Monde will pay a dominant role in the development of external French broadcasting. My aim is to speed up its development by speeding up new content while counting on the new technologies for the broadcasting of news and programmes which are the internet and public telephones,” said a statement from de Pouzilhac.

The meeting followed months of discord between France and the non-French partners in the organisation, Belgium, Canada and Switzerland, over what was perceived as a casual attitude to the organisation. All parties have now welcomed the new agreement that is seen as safeguarding the multilateral approach of the channel.

The new organisation brings TV5 together with international news channel France 24 and RFI on areas including distribution/marketing, news, research and development, and websites.
