McCarthy rues Chelsea talk

Rovers ace blames speculation on slump

Blackburn striker Benni McCarthy has conceded being linked with Chelsea affected his Rovers form.

The South African ace made a blistering start to life in the Premier League as an 18-goal haul in the 2006/07 season that saw him finish the campaign as second highest scorer.

However, his impressive tally brought about talk of joining former Porto boss Jose Mourinho at Chelsea, speculation that subsequently saw his form for Rovers dip.

McCarthy has now conceded that the talk distracted him and that he did indeed take his eye off the ball.

"I was talking to (Jose) a lot and there was this idea I might join him," explained McCarthy

"I would have preferred no talk of joining him at Chelsea.

"I could have concentrated on Blackburn and my season might have been better."
