(1950) Young 'mudlark' Wheeler, who makes his living scavenging in the Thames' mud, finds a cameo depicting the Queen, who he seeks to find.Squelching through the mud of the Thames at low-tide, 10-year-old Wheeler (Ray) finds a dead seaman. Searching the body, he discovers a cheap medallion of Queen Victoria, who he understands to be 'mother of England'. Seeing in her kindly features (shurely shome mistake?) some flash of the mother he has never known, the scruffy urchin sets out for Windsor Castle in search of her. Dunne is suitably amused in this sentimental bit of twaddle (with a lot of padding to help her), but Guinness and Ray manage to upstage her as Disraeli and the sweet li'l kid respectively.
The One That Got Away
(1957) The exploits of German flier Franz Von Werra who was the only prisoner-of-war captured in World War II Britain to escape and get back to Germany.British-made POW escape caper with a difference. Hardy Kruger stars as a real-life German flying ace making his break for freedom from a succession of Allied camps
It's a credit to the might of the propaganda machine operating throughout and beyond the Second World War that many of us are still only vaguely aware that the Allies had their own POW camps. Perhaps the authorities missed a trick, because while our boys were burrowing to freedom like rabbits from the Nazi jails, Jerry was having no such luck. In fact only one German prisoner ever escaped from an Allied camp to return to the Fatherland. His name was Oberleutnant Franz Von Werra, and The One That Got Away is his story.
River Of No Return
(1954) Robert Mitchum stars as Matt Calder, a farmer recently released from prison after serving a sentence for killing a man.Two legends collide as Marilyn Monroe and Robert Mitchum dodge the injuns and fall in love in this routine Western
Preminger directs a starry cast including Mitchum, Calhoun and Monroe in this patchy drama which owes more to its gorgeous scenery and musical numbers than it does to anything else.
(1995) A disparate group set out on safari into the heart of the Congo and are attacked by a troop of intelligent killer apes.A motley crew of scientists and mercenaries embark on a perilous expedition to the Congo to locate the missing son of a tycoon and a stash of priceless diamonds. Action adventure starring Laura Linney, Dylan Walsh, Ernie Hudson and Tim Curry; directed by Frank Marshall
Congo The influence of the B-movies of the 1940s and 1950s on some of Hollywood's most successful film directors is undisputable: George Lucas took his love of Flash Gordon serials and turned it into the billion dollar Star Wars empire, while close pal Steven Spielberg used his affection for the same shorts to create the ever-popular Indiana Jones series.
(2002) Denzel Washington hijacks a hospital ER, demanding his son be saved even if he has to donate his own heart for him to live.Mediocre yarn in which desperate blue collar worker Denzel Washington holds an ER at gunpoint in an attempt to force the hospital to find a heart donor for his dying son
John Q In John Q. Denzel Washington tis salt of the earth Chicago factory worker John Quincy Archibald. Financially, things are grim for John (his work hours have been cut and his car has been repossessed) but his loving wife Denise (Elise) and extrovert 10 year old son Michael (Smith) keep things cheery - notably with the latter's enthusiastic body-builder impressions.
(2004) Tim Story's all-action thriller stars Queen Latifah as Belle, driver of the fastest taxi in New York, who teams up with inept cop Washburn.US remake of the hit French action movie, with Queen Latifah as a sassy New York cabbie who teams up with cop Jimmy Fallon to foil a gang of bank robbers
Taxi The traditional buddy action movie structure involves two contrasting characters thrown together, fighting and arguing until they put their differences aside to work together. It needs a new twist to keep it fresh, something that's conspicuously lacking from Taxi, along with thrills, style and a decent sense of humour.
Run Lola Run
(1998) Lola's boyfriend is a small-time courier for a big-time gangster. When things go wrong for him Lola is given an ultimatum...Multi-award winning German thriller starring Franka Potente. Lola has twenty minutes to deliver a hundred grand to her boyfriend in order to save his life. Then she has to do it again. And then she has to do it again
Run Lola Run This massively entertaining and exhaustingly paced thriller is awash with flashy little tricks and cunningly handled conceits. Short, fast and extremely slick, it looks like primetime MTV yet manages to set the argument for free will against endless footage of a really cool chick just, like, running.
