Dutch public broadcasters to launch HD

May 15, 2008

The Dutch public broadcasters will launch their regular HD services in 2009. They will also start temporary simulcast of Nederland 1 at the beginning of next month to offer Dutch DTH and cable viewers HD coverage of the Euro 2008 football championship and the Beijing Olympics.

The HD version will be available to viewers of most cable networks including UPC and the three Ziggo networks Casema, Multikabel and @Home, as well as the HD DTH subscribers to Canal Digitaal. All the sporting action will be broadcast in native 720p/50, including all live segments from the studios in Hilversum.

Other programing on the Nederland 1 channel will be upconverted to HD. During the first quarter of 2009, the Dutch public broadcasters hope to start permanent HD versions of the three main channels Nederland 1, 2 and 3.
