I'm keen on buying a dreambox.

I use a topfield box with a one metre dish and a diablo 2.2 and 2.3 with a cas3 programmer, but i want to go one step further, i'd really like to try the dreambox but the only thing i know is it's linux based computer, what i would like to know is it capable of opening up more packages.

And i know it's very difficult to setup and i'm prepared to put alot of time into it, what i would like to know really is what dreambox is best for me, because i know the 550 as no HD, please can someone help with the in's and out's, thanks lee.

Re: I'm keen on buying a dreambox.

Pls. The best information about this matter , could be seen
at "I have a dreambox" . Itīs the official site of that brand .
Is a good option ; a linux system is not a black system
(close one) ; if we have a good knowledge about this
Operating System , you can walk inside . Other strongs points
are the best support and software (release) development .
The Tv images , shouldnīt be the best , but itīs very acceptable .
Other points . List unlimited of channels ; a lot of favorite lists .
Sound AC3 optical , optional emu/cams etc etc. . Iīm a DR user
    5620s hardware . Is a oldest , but after a break , the power
supply (fournished by Satwell (poland)) , is alive again .
    Good luck
    Bye

Again , setup is very easy to understand .
There is a lot of small utilities for all .
    But one important thing against ;
PRICE ... all development must be paid .
    OK

Re: I'm keen on buying a dreambox.

I know a bit about Linux ~from Dbox II and VDR (on the PC), the latter beeing about the same brains as a Reelbox, also a Linux Reciver. So I should have a small clue here

Will you open more packages with such a box as opposed to a CAM?

NO AFAIK the Conax "system" is still cloesd and likely will be for some time to come, after all somebody has to either sell you a new CAM and or update for said CAM, or worse yet, sell you some Ice-scraper...

The only advantage is that if your good at linux programing you might be able to do a bit more in the way of customization to the GUI or have further options in beeing able to run other plugins, possibly even firefox (ture enough on the PC in anycase).

But, the SoftCam is only as good as the given SoftCam, and that means mostly 19.2 and 13 @ the moment...

Barring all that do you have a model in mind?
Personaly I'd give the 500. 7000 and 7025 (i.e. the 7 series), a compleate miss, I shouldn't have to tell you that the Dream isn't cheap, and allthough DVB-S might still have some life in the old dog yet, the furture is in DVB-S2 (read AVC H.2.64 MPEG4).

Irregardless of all eles I beleave that this should be your fist thooght in any new purchase so long as you have a CI your golden...

Re: I'm keen on buying a dreambox.

    The EMU's over DR , are similar to a Cam_card . Althougt in DR a EMU's is
a piece of optional software , that development is suport by IHAD ; nobody can garantier if package A other B , will be OK ; seeing paid TV
is covered and protected by law . EMU's (emulation cam's) , like CCcam , mgcamd
evocamd , camd3 , softcam , newcamd , etc. etc , are suported by IHAD and at moment packages trought N3 aren't yet de_hacked , the same for all
known Cam_cards . Simply in DR they are a piece of software , selected
by user_operator . Actualy any "deco" is able to do emulation but only
over a single emu_cam ; normally as softcam lied with the operation
system (black system where you cann't toutch anything . Over DR , you have the chance to select the best for you .
But DR , has other strong points ; the facility to have a unlimited lists
of favorites ; the possibily to command a channel (channel change) from
you PC , easy transfer from deco to PC and vice_versa . This are the optional tools that you have at your hand , supported and revised bye the brand . Closed .
    Greetings
    AVilas .

I'll second that, I bought a DM800 and found it pretty easy to set up and add extra images. There are several simple tutorials knocking about, Google is everyones friend.
