in2movies folds in Germany
German online video library in2movies will cease operating on June 11, with customers being currently informed of the move by e-mail. The closure comes after the owners, Arvato Mobile and Warner Bros, failed to find a buyer for the operation.
“The portal no longer makes economic sense,” said media service provider Arvato Mobile in Hamburg. The Bertelsmann subsidiary jointly operated the internet-based download platform comprising movies and television series with Hollywood film studio Warner Bros. The offer, which was launched in April 2006 at www.in2movies.de, has over 2,500 films and TV series episodes which can be purchased under a download-to-own scheme or rented via video-on-demand (VoD).
Pay-TV operator Premiere was examining a takeover of the company at the end of 2007 and had registered its intentions with the federal cartel office, but eventually decided against the move. It is believed that this decision hastened the closure of the service. According to industry sources, Premiere plans to instead add its own download-to-own solution to its existing VoD portal at http://vod.premiere.de.
