Sky Broadband Keeps Growing
The top U.K. satellite TV platform continues to create waves with its ongoing broadband push.
Sky Broadband, the DSL component for British Sky Broadcasting's bundle of services, added 50 percent more new subscribers than its nearest competitor during the first quarter. That accounted for more than a third of total new broadband subscribers in the United Kingdom during the same period, stated data from Strategy Analytics.
Sky added nearly one million broadband customers during a 12 month period through March, compared to 741,000 for BT Retail. BT Retail remains the largest broadband provider overall, with 4.4 million subscribers and a 26 percent market share, stated Strategy Analytics.
"Sky is maintaining its position as the U.K.'s fastest growing broadband service provider," said David Mercer, vice president of Strategy Analytics' Digital Consumer Practice. "Although with the broadband market maturing there are indications that the company's quarterly net adds might track at a slower rate in 2008 than in 2007."
