Al Jazeera buys ITN archive

Arabic news channel Al Jazeera has bought access rights to ITNís news and video archive. The deal gives Al Jazeera rights to more than 800,000 hours of material stretching back more than 30 years, and to access ITNís other print-based source material that spans three centuries.
Al Jazeera, which has a thriving documentary channel, will be able to access the ITN archive for up to 5 years. The archive comes from ITNís own resources plus material acquired over the years by ITN from Granada, Channel 4, Reuters and British Pathe.

One of many moments contained uniquely in the footage is an interview ITN carried out with Margaret Thatcher by ITNís Michael Brunson in which she cried over losing the prime ministerís job.

The licence with Al Jazeera permits the broadcaster unlimited global transmission of the footage on the Al Jazeera news channel, plus access through sites like YouTube.
