20,000 Leagues Under The Sea Just as nobody's written better adventure novels than Jules Verne, so no one's produced finer family entertainment than Walt Disney. It's perhaps no surprise then that the Disney-produced adaptation of Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea is such an unqualified triumph. A superb and exciting film, Disney's picture brought nuclear science, shipwrecks, submarines, cannibals and the monsters of the deep to 1950s audiences.
Green for Danger
(1946) A wartime tale of murder most horrid, with Alastair Sim as the detective sent in to a hospital to sniff out the perpetrator of an operating table death
When a bomb victim is admitted to an emergency ward for civilians during the Second World War, he leaves in a far worse state: dead. In the seemingly serene environs of a Tudor mansion with its wood beams and manicured gardens, suspicions rise as to whether the unfortunate patient died accidentally or was killed, leaving the surgeon, anesthetist and three attendant nurses under suspicion of murder.
(1950) One of the first westerns to take a look at what happens to a gunslinger when he's over the hill. Peck is Johnny Ringo, fed up with his reputation as a killer. When he arrives in a small town his only aim is quietly to rekindle a relationship with the wife and kid he deserted, but the townsfolk see him as a threat. While the young bucks want to challenge him to fights, the law-abiding burghers want him out because he's a magnet for trouble. It's almost perfectly judged by writer, director and cast, and is among the very best westerns ever made.
A Walk in the Clouds
(1995) Reeves does a fine job as the married soldier returning home from war to be with the wife he hardly knows. He meets unmarried but pregnant Sanchez-Gijon and agrees to pretend to be her husband for a day so her traditionally minded father (Giannini) won't abandon her. But the two actually fall in love and have to find some way of reconciling their marital difficulties. Reeves uses his shy charm to great effect, allowing the passion to come from Sanchez-Gijon and Giannini. Some spell binding images keep the romance alive, but the film loses its magic in the last 15 minutes.

Collateral Director Michael Mann's career has taken him into the life of Muhammed Ali for Ali and all the way back to the mid-eighteenth century Native America for Last Of The Mohicans, yet he is always drawn back to noir, with two men duelling as if they were two aspects of one soul. To the cop/villain dialectic of De Niro and Pacino in Heat and the cop/serial killer doppelgangers of Will Graham and Hannibal Lektor in Manhunter, we can now add Tom Cruise's hitman Vincent and Jamie Foxx's cab driver Max Durocher in Collateral, the strong versus the weak.

Watcher So paddling around in Hannibal's backwash, we have this - yet another serial killer movie. But instead of Anthony Hopkins, we get Keanu Reeves, putting his expressionless fish-eyes to good use as cold-blooded killer David Griffin.
