The Dark Corner
(1946) Quality film noir from Henry Hathaway, cunningly plotted and ominously atmospheric.Lucille Ball stars in this quality film noir. Cunningly plotted and ominously atmospheric, a down-at-heel private eye finds himself accused of a murder he didn't commit.
Long before she found fame as the dizzy wannabe starlet in sitcom 'I Love Lucy', Lucille Ball had a reputation for brightening up even the dullest studio-made drama. The Dark Corner catches her just before she entered the big league and the result is a highly accomplished thriller, undeservedly eclipsed by her later achievements.

The Gunfighter
(1950) Gregory Peck stars in Henry King's noir western as Jimmy Ringo, an aging gunslinger who rides into a strange town. One of the first westerns to take a look at what happens to a gunslinger when he's over the hill. Peck is Johnny Ringo, fed up with his reputation as a killer. When he arrives in a small town his only aim is quietly to rekindle a relationship with the wife and kid he deserted, but the townsfolk see him as a threat. While the young bucks want to challenge him to fights, the law-abiding burghers want him out because he's a magnet for trouble. It's almost perfectly judged by writer, director and cast, and is among the very best westerns ever made.

Simply Irresistible
(1999) Sarah Michelle Gellar stars as Amanda Shelton, the worst cook in the world who gets bitten by a magical crab.Gellar takes time off from wasting vampires to star in this culinary romantic comedy. She plays a sprightly young thing who inherits a failing diner. Having been nipped by a mysterious crab, her magical concoctions attract a booming clientele and the attentions of hunk restaurateur Flanery. Pubescent boys go ga-ga over Gellar (she's second only to Britney as the most faked celebrity on internet porn sites), but then so do girls (for more wholesome reasons, obviously). Pencil cases around the world are daubed with her button-nosed visage, and this fairytale aims for the wannabes, hitting its target with calculated precision

Collateral
(2004) A hitman arrives in Los Angeles to do five hits in a night, with the unwitting help of a cab driver.Director Michael Mann's career has taken him into the life of Muhammed Ali for Ali and all the way back to the mid-eighteenth century Native America for Last Of The Mohicans, yet he is always drawn back to noir, with two men duelling as if they were two aspects of one soul. To the cop/villain dialectic of De Niro and Pacino in Heat and the cop/serial killer doppelgangers of Will Graham and Hannibal Lektor in Manhunter, we can now add Tom Cruise's hitman Vincent and Jamie Foxx's cab driver Max Durocher in Collateral, the strong versus the weak.

No sooner has Nick Love's Outlaw exited cinemas than its Cockney star is back with another eye-for-an-eye thriller, this time as Adam, a security alarm installer who lives to regret accepting a new client's offer of a night in the country.

Believer Henry Bean is living proof that Hollywood movies don't have to be dumbed-down, mass-marketed popcorn fodder. His screenplays for the likes of Internal Affairs and Deep Cover were shot through with intricate plots and ambiguous, contradictory characters.
