New twist in TVP debate

The Polish Ministry of Culture has unveiled a controversial plan to scrap the public broadcaster TVP, radio counterpart Polskie Radio and their regional affiliates.

According to local reports, they would be replaced by a new TVP responsible for TVP1, TVP2, TV Polonia and thematic channels; a new Polskie Radio overseeing the countryís main public radio channels; and Polskie Media Regionalne, incorporating all their regional interests.

Scrapping the existing services is seen as a necessary prerequisite to restructuring public broadcasting in Poland, cut unnecessary cost and reduce TVPís workforce by up top 1,500 people.

The proposal is nevertheless likely to meet with opposition from several quarters, many of which see public broadcasting being at threat from the current Civic Platform (PO)-led government.
