Spain: Niche channel viewing on the rise

Spain's thematic channels' audiences continue to gain on conventional TV. By the end of July, niche channels were receiving 17% of the total audience.

Nearly 12 million viewers watched niche channels at least once a day according to a latest study by TNSofres. The reason for this is the fragmentation of audiences due to the arrival of DTT and the growth of pay TV.

Thematic channels do even better in the early morning of the day with 21% of total and also the morning with a 24.6% of total.

By demographic, male viewers are watching for 18.2% of the time, children between four and 12 years old 32.7%, viewers between 25-44 years old 20.7% and middle class people 19%.

As for regions the thematic channels are the viewing referencce in the Canary Islands (22.3%), Valencia (21.3%) , the Balearic Islands (20,3%) and Madrid (17.7%).

Finally the study underlines those thematic channels with most number of followers are TVE's sporting TV channel TeleDeporte with a 1.5% share followed by Disney Channel (1%) and TVE's children's channel Clan TVE (0.7%).
