Zee News earmarks cash for new chnls
News broadcasting is big business in India and one of the country's leaders in the field, Zee News (pictured, left), wants to expand its operations further, and diversify into entertainment services.
The company has applied to India's government for permission to launch up to six services, of which three would be news-based. Those - an English-language business news service, an international news channel and a Telugu-language news channel - may be joined by Tamil and Malayalam-language general entertainment services and a Bengali film channel.
Zee News plans to invest up to Rs5 billion (US$117 million) in all of its channels by the end of 2010, although that inclues the established services as well as Marathi movie channel Zee Talkies, which Zee News has taken over from Zee Entertainment.
