16.7m French broadband subs

France’s broadband internet connections rose to 16.7 million by June 30, including 15.87 million via ADSL.

French communications authority Arcep also mentions in its latest figures that over 450,000 new subcribers were recruited in the second quarter of 2008, 2.8% growth. Over the last year, 2.5 million French homes connected to the internet for the first time. This 18% growth is however slightly inferior to the 27% growth reached the year before.

Alternative operators such as Free or Neuf Cegetel still expanded their coverage of the country, reaching 71.2% of the population by the end of June compared to 69.7% the previous quarter.
