Alonso quickest in P2

Rain plays havoc at Spa

Fernando Alonso put in a late run to head the timesheets at the end of Friday's rain and crash-interrupted second practice.
The Renault driver clocked a 1:48.454 to edge out the Ferrari of Felipe Massa, while Heikki Kovalainen finished in third place.
With a threat of rain hanging in the air and the track temperature reaching just 18'C, the day's second practice session began with Sebastian Vettel and Nick Heidfeld the first out on track.

The drivers were quick to start setting lap times due to the threat of rain, with Lewis Hamilton going P1 ahead of Jarno Trulli, David Coulthard, Seb Bourdais, Kimi Raikkonen and Vettel. In fact only two drivers, Jenson Button and Heikki Kovalainen, failed to set a time in the first ten minutes.
Felipe Massa, Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso all improved their times to slot in behind Hamilton, taking up the first four slots on the timesheets.

Sebastien Bourdais understeered wide at Les Combes, taking to the grass before heading back to the Toro Rosso garage to see if he'd done any damage to his car.
Kovalainen went P6 on his first timed lap of the afternoon, the final driver to get within a second of Hamilton's P1 time. However, unlikely many of the other drivers Kovalainen set his time using the harder option Bridgestone tyres. The Finn moved up one place on his next lap.
Jenson Button moved up to 16th place with a 1:51.313 while Heidfeld goes P7, edging ahead of Vettel who in turn improved his own time, going fifth ahead of Kovalainen.

With light rain falling and affecting grip levels, Mark Webber quickly found himself stuck in the gravel having tapped the barriers after going straight on at Rivage.
The rain intensified sending all the drivers scurrying back to their garages where, barring a short one lap around the track by Bourdais, they all remained for the next 18 minutes before Vettel ventured out.

The German crossed the line with a 1:55.738, which was six seconds off his best time in the dry. Vettel continued lapping taking two seconds off his wet time as the rain lifted. Due to the length of the circuit only parts of it were wet.
The final thirty minutes of practice saw the drivers once again hit the track. Raikkonen spun at the exit of Rivage, damaging the rear of his F2008 against the tyres, while moments later the session was red flagged when Giancarlo Fisichella lost his Force India on a damp patch, putting his car into the barriers.

The session restarted ten minutes later with all the drivers excluding the three with damaged cars taking to the track. Nelson Piquet Jr, though, soon joined the list of those with damaged cars as he spun and hit the barrier in a repeat of Raikkonen's accident.
Kovalainen improved to third place before taking the P1 slot off his team-mate. Alonso, though, soon relegated the Finn while Massa slotted into second place.
