German soccer fans can look forward to a new thematic channel after anti media concentration commission KEK gave the green light to media company Republik Fußball GmbH for its planned service Republik Fußball TV (Republic Football TV).

The channel, which will report on soccer clubs below the top-ranking Bundesliga, will be distributed nationwide via satellite. The operating company is backed by investment groups Corner Invest and Cluster Capital Partners which each hold a 37.4% stake. The remaining 25.2% is owned by media entrepreneur Franz-Josef Rehmann, who was also behind the music channel Würfelzucker (Sugar Cube) before it ceased transmissions in May 2007. According to Rehmann, Würfelzucker is currently undergoing a restructuring process.
