Open TV buys RUZZ TV

Middleware specialist Open TV has bought Ruzz TV, an Australian-based company that specialises in advanced TV and “advertising services” says the press release (workstation pictured). Financials were not revealed.

“Ruzz TV is an innovative provider of high-quality technology solutions for broadcasters,” said Ben Bennett, OpenTV’s CEO. “With this acquisition, we are excited to complement our products and offer broadcasters around the world the right components to manage their workflow and content processes quickly and efficiently.”

Most press releases that contain words like “solutions”, “mission critical” and even “workflow” tend to end up in the Recycle Bin, but Ruzz TV is worth a look, especially given that targeted advertising is a hot topic for many in the TV business right now. Ruzz TV was a runner-up in SMPTE’s recent Technology Innovation awards, in particular for its AMY workflow automation solution.

The bigger question, perhaps, is whether this acquisition means that Open TV – majority controlled by Kudelski - is intent on breaking out of its middleware box and moving across the value chain into the TV (and mobile video) production area. Looks like they are.
