France: DTT entrants bid for favours

French DTT’s new entrants, including channels NRJ 12, Gulli, NT1, Direct 8 and Virgin 17 have asked to be excused from paying the 3% tax on private channels’ ad revenues.

The broadcasters have requested not to be taxed before the official digital switchover takes place in 2011.

Channels are arguing their economical situation is still frail and under the fight of historical networks, domininated by TF1 and M6.

The French audiovisual law package will be discussed in Parliament at the end of the month and has introduced this tax to help raise funds to compensate France Télévisions for the public service broadcasting partial advertising ban.
