Blu-Ray discs arrive in China
Blu-Ray discs will launch in China tomorrow (November 21), with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment planning a major marketing push next year.
Discs retailing at around RMB200 (US$30) will be available online and in-store with an initial 30 titles available including Hancock, the recent Spiderman movies and classics including Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Excel Media is in charge of distribution for the discs.
The introduction of the discs coincides with the launch of a Sony Blu-Ray player, the BDP-S350, into the market.
SPHE’s senior vice-president of international, T Paul Miller, said: "We’re thrilled to be the first to offer the high-quality HD product that discerning Chinese customers demand and deserve.”
Piracy of high-definition discs is already an issue in China.
