Intelsat takes 5 Sea Launch contracts

Satellite operator Intelsat has signed a multiple launch contract with the Boeing-owned Sea Launch floating ‘Odyssey’ rocket launch platform. The five as-yet unnamed missions will start later in 2010 and cover the period until 2012.

The contract is a major commitment, especially given the catastrophic loss of the SES-owned NSS-8 on the Sea Launch pad in January 2007.

Neither party has revealed the value of the contract, but one suspects that it was highly competitive.

"We want to thank the Intelsat team for their continued confidence in our team and our launch system," said Kjell Karlsen, president and general manager of Sea Launch, in a statement. "This agreement demonstrates the long-standing partnership that Sea Launch has developed with Intelsat over several years, featuring eight successful missions to date, most recently the flawless launch of the Galaxy 19 satellite on September 24.

This award, from the industry's leading satellite operator, represents a significant addition to the Sea Launch manifest. We are looking forward to executing these five additional missions in support of Intelsat's fleet replacement requirements."
