Telefonica, Vivendi linking for Spain DTH?

Spain’s Telefonica and France’s Vivendi have reportedly met formally to discuss a joint bid for Spanish DTH operation Digital+. Digital+ is being sold by Spanish media group Prisa in order to trim debts.

Officially, the closing date for bids for Digital+ ended on Sunday Nov 23, although the bidding deadline has already been extended at least once.

A joint bid is seen as being the best bet to overcome threats of market dominance (by Telefonica). Telefonica also operates its Imagenio broadband service, and part-ownership of Digital+ would place further pressure on cable operator Ono, which last week announced plans to lay off one third of its workforce.

BSkyB, once interested, has already withdrawn from the process although Mediaset might still be a player.
