Serbia launches DTT channel

As part of the celebrations of its 50th anniversary, the Serbian public broadcaster RTS has launched its first specialised digital terrestrial television channel.

Dedicated to culture and art, RTS Digital is on the air 24 hours a day and has an emphasis on classical music, jazz, ballet and opera. The schedule will also include documentaries, movies and educational programmes on how to enjoy art works.

According to Tatjana Citic, responsible for RTSís digital programme unit, the new channel is on Telekom Srbijaís IPTV service, as well in the basic package of many Serbian cable operators. No DTH carriage deals have been signed so far.

On the basis of the agreement signed with the ITU, the latest date by when Serbia has to completely switch to digital terrestrial is 17 June 17, 2015. However Citic says that RTS is aiming for ASO at the end of 2011.

In accordance with the above mentioned obligation, RTS has for some time been broadcasting a digital multiplex on UHF channel 27 (location Avala) and channel 32 (location Iriski Venac), which can be received in Belgrade, Novi Sad and surrounding areas. The multiplex re-transmits the RTS 1, RTS 2 and TV Avala terrestrial TV channels.
