J:Com launches next-gen HD PVR

Japanese cabler Jupiter Telecommunications (J:Com) is to start offering a 500G-hard disk set-top box complete with DVD drive to its subscribers from mid-December.

The new HDR Plus service will be available in all J:Comís service areas on December 17. With 500G, users will be able to record up to 80 hours of high-def recording or nearly 900 hours in standard-definition, nearly four times as much as J:Comís conventional HD recorder. That has already seen 353,800 deployments since its launch in April 2006, some 20% of J:Comís digital cable subs.

The box also supports recording in digital terrestrial and broadcast satellite digital as well as digital cable. It will cost •1260 a month (US$13.50).
