CNN wins November

US Presidential elections are good for news broadcasters, generating millions of extra eyeballs, and the Nielson’s for November show that CNN did well against arch-rival Fox News. Or did it?

In raw numbers CNN won the month, reaching an average of 369,000 viewers (25-54-year olds, total day) in the most important demographic. Fox News achieved an average of 355,000, while MSNBC brought in 290,000. This is the best result for CNN for 10 years.

However, stay with the same all-important demographic and looking just at Prime Time and Fox won the evenings, averaging more viewers than CNN. Fox News Channel averaged 674,000 viewers in prime time and 355,000 for total-day, respectively. Even star turns like Larry King were trounced by news rivals, with Rachel Maddow’s show on MSNBC outscoring King with an average 1.83 million viewers, 672,00 in the 25-54 demo. King attracted 1.71 million total viewers and 565,000 in the key demo.
