Versatel takes over MediaHome
German telco Versatel continues its acquisition course in the cable market: In conjunction with investment group Life Science, the ADSL provider has purchased cable operator MediaHome for €13 million.
The Essen-based company serves around 81,000 households with its network reaching directly into customers’ homes (network level 4).
In June, Versatel acquired Berlin-based cable company AKF Telekabel. With the cable operators’ network level 4 connections, the company can relinquish the costly renting of last mile lines from Deutsche Telekom to offer households internet and telephony services.
Cable networks also offer the advantage of higher data rates than the maximum of 16 Mbit/s enabled by ADSL2+. It is expected in the industry that further telcos will follow this strategy.
