Five 'to drop US sport studio shows'

Five may drop the studio shows around its late-night coverage of American sports, it has emerged.

The channel's NFL pundit, Mike Carlson, told fans on Facebook that the decision was "forced" on chief executive Dawn Airey and controller of sport Robert Charles because of "financial constraints".

He played down rumours suggesting that US sport coverage may disappear from the channel altogether but said if it were to remain, "it would be in a much simpler format".

Statements from Five's duty office, which were first posted on the Digital Spy forums thread about Carlson's comments, confirmed that changes are being considered: "We have been reviewing our Late Night Sports output over a number of months and have decided that it may be necessary to change the content of the sports block. This could mean that live coverage of American sports will be affected; however, this has not been finalised yet as discussions are ongoing with the various federations.

"When we have concluded these conversations and put into place our schedule we will announce any changes. Until that time there is little point in us commenting upon speculation."
