France: DTT channels boosted in 2008
French free DTT channels almost doubled their audience shares in 2008, while the traditional networks fell back, with TF1 notably passing from 30.7% share in 2007 to 27.2%. The leading DTT trio is formed by TMC, W9 and Gulli.
According to Mediametrie’s annual roundup, DTT channels reached an average audience share of 11.1% vs 5.9% in 2007. And 29.2 million people, which is 51% of the population, are now equipped to receive DTT channels against 17.9 million in early 2008.
Traditional terrestrial networks saw their audience share decreasing 6.2 points to reach an average audience share of 73.3%. TF1 was more struck by the DTT growth than other PSB and private networks. Cable and satellite channels remained stable at 12.6 %.
In terms of programmes, M6 took over from TF1 for the first time ever the place for the most-watched TV event. Euro soccer match France-Italy gathered 13 million viewers last June. Out of the five best M6 ratings last year, four went to soccer matches. But TF1 kept the total lead as it registered 18 out of the 20 best ratings
