German RTL joins iTunes
Germany’s leading commercial television broadcaster RTL has commenced offering selected TV series on Apple’s media portal iTunes.
In the section RTL NOW , internet users can currently download three series – Alarm für Cobra 11, Doctor’s Diary and Böse Mädchen – for €1.49 to €1.99 per episode.
The videos, which are commercial-free, can be watched on PC, Mac, iPod and iPhone or through Apple TV on the conventional TV set. RTL wants to expand the offer in the forthcoming weeks with additional series such as Doppelter Einsatz and Die Anwälte der Toten as well as the three-part mini-series Die Patin.
With its portfolio at iTunes, the Cologne-based broadcaster complements its own online download portal. Since January 2007, internet users have been able to access at www.rtlnow.de a large part of RTL’s TV programmes up to seven days after their initial TV broadcast in full length for free.
The paid-for section comprises selected series, which are available ahead of their TV premieres, and series archives. In 2008, the portal counted up to 12 million video viewings per month of complete TV programmes.
