Ofcom has started the auction of local digital terrestrial television licences in Manchester and Cardiff.

The media regulator consulted on the plans to offer spectrum that could be used for low-power local digital TV multiplexes late last year. The frequency blocks being made available are channel 30 from the Wenvoe transmitter, covering Cardiff, and channel 57 from Winter Hill, covering Manchester. Both cities already have local TV stations operating under restricted analogue TV service licences; however, the digital channel allocation would permit a multiplex of services to be offered.

Applications for the Manchester licence must be received by Ofcom by January 26, while those for Cardiff must be received by February 18.
