French Freesat adds HDTV

France’s free-to-air TNTSAT satellite service, transmitted by SES Astra, has sold more than 1m receivers over the past 16 months, and is now claimed to be serving more than 5m homes.

TNTSAT is a service targeted to regions in France where TV households cannot receive signals from terrestrial transmitters. It offers French TV viewers the full range of French digital terrestrial free-TV channels over the ASTRA satellites, allowing 100% coverage of France.

TNT SAT decoders are available in both SD and HD versions with the first hard-disk decoders on sale by the end of 2008.

Next up is a TNTSAT HD service, which will be launched on 15 February 2009 with the free DTT (Digital Terrestrial TV) channels in High Definition comprising TF1 HD, France 2 HD, M6 HD and ARTE HD, also available on Astra.
