France: Probe into exclusive IPTV deals
French competition authority Conseil de la Concurrence is going to investigate the exclusive offers proposed by internet service providers on their IPTV services.
Orange’s premium movie and series channels as well as sport channel could be threatened.
Both Ministers of Economy and Culture argued in a statement that the “impact of exclusive TV broadcasting and the distribution rights of pay TV channels and services” must be re-examined in a context of profound change.
Led to give a definition of the one or the several pertinent markets concerned by exclusivities owing to the diversity of operators, this analysis will also be able to “determine whether, and under which conditions, these exclusivities could produce anti-competitive effects by strengthening of position of one particular operator.”
According to the government, France is an IPTV pioneer with over 3.6 million households susbcribing to ADSL.
