Romania starts planning for DTT

Romania should see the launch of a DTT service in 2010.

Quoted in Media Expres, Liviu Nistoran, the president of the National Communications Authority (ANC), said that licences to operate a platform, employing MPEG-4 compression and initially offering ten channels, would be awarded next year.

He added that the cost of launching a service to cover the whole of Romania would be €100 million, with only a few companies, including Radiocom, able to provide the infrastructure.

Nistoran also said that legislation, in the form of an emergency ordinance, would be needed ahead of the launch of the DTT service.

Radiocom is undertaking DTT trials in Bucharest and Paltinis.
