Big TV claims southern success

Reliance Communications’ Indian DTH platform, Big TV, is claiming half a million subscribers in southern India, a challenging area because of the diversity of the population and languages spoken.

The platform launched five months ago and had over 1 million subscribers across all of India with 100 days.

Mahesh Prasad, president, Reliance Communications, said: "Reaching the figure of 5 lakh (500,000) customer milestone in the four Southern states was a great New Year gift to us. It is indeed a testimony to the product and proposition offered by Big TV and its success in accelerating the growth momentum of DTH sector in India."

He added that Big TV ofers an inclusive bouquet for a cross-section of the population, rather than offering stiff packaging of southern-focused channels.

Sun Direct TV, which offers a platform countrywide but focused on southern Indian fare, recently reached 2 million subs across the country. Dish TV and Tata Sky have over 4 million and 3 million subs respectively.
