Mediaset and RAI take on Sky Italia

Mediaset's chairman Fedele Confalonieri said Jan 21 that a new ‘Freesat’ platform would be established over Italy in direct competition with Sky Italia. Italy’s public broadcasting giant RAI as well as Telecom Italia Media would also be part of the consortium, named Tivu.

Tivu will launch and help the analogue switch off process in Italy due to wrap by 2012. "To talk about a war against Sky is excessive, this is just competition," Confalonieri said at a Rome conference looking at digital terrestrial TV.

The plan is for Tivu to use both digital terrestrial bandwidth and satellite spectrum to offer free-to-air channels and will be open to outside broadcasters.
