YouTube wants to get on TV
Internet video portal YouTube wants to make its service available on conventional television sets. “Our target is to be present with YouTube on every screen,” the founder and head of YouTube, Chad Hurley, told German news magazine Focus.
“Our users should have the freedom to access our platform via their computer, mobile phone, video game console or TV set,” Hurley added. According to the magazine, the subsidiary of search engine Google is currently negotiating with companies such as Sony and Panasonic.
Hurley also commented on the decision by Germany’s largest commercial broadcaster RTL to order YouTube to remove all video clips with excerpts from the current series of its popular casting show Deutschland sucht den Superstar, the German version of Pop Idol in the UK and American Idol in the USA. With the move, the broadcaster wants to gain traffic for its own video portal Clipfish which features a large special on the show.
According to Hurley, RTL’s decision isn’t necessarily typical. He said that in the UK and USA YouTube even signed agreements with FremantleMedia, the international producer of the show. “There, users can officially watch clips from FremantleMedia’s productions on YouTube.”
The YouTube founder doesn’t see a conflict with TV channels. “We offer broadcasters all possibilities: We remove their content, if they desire it. They can also leave it on YouTube to promote their programmes. The broadcasters can even make money with the uploaded clips as we let them participate in our advertising income.”
Hurley said that YouTube is currently experimenting with different forms of advertising on the platform. “With YouTube we will certainly resemble more the advertising you see on conventional television than is usually the case on the internet.”
