Al Jazeera applies for licence to broadcast in Canada

Al Jazeera English is applying to regulators to begin broadcasting in Canada and is launching a new website to clear up “misperceptions and myths” about the Qatar-based television news network. Already available in more than 100 countries, the English-language version of Al Jazeera is currently available in the United States on just two eastern cable TV providers and one satellite service.
Tony Burman, the former editor-in-chief of CBC News who runs the two-year-old English service from Qatar, said yesterday in an interview that “the timing is perfect” to enter Canada.
