Thor 5 full, says Telenor

Not only is Telenor Satellite Broadcasting’s Thor 5 craft full, but pre-bookings on the upcoming Thor 6 also means the craft will be 75-80% full at launch, according to CEO Cato Halsaa.

Thor 6 is slated for launch this autumn to TSB’s 1 deg W increasingly busy ‘hot spot’. “We are already reaching 2.5 million DTH households and a further five million in cable head end reach from this position. We see a big customer interest in this position. The satellite has 36 transponders. We expect to have sold 75-80 percentage of the capacity already sold at launch,” said Halsaa.

Halsaa said the strong demand meant that a proposed Thor 7 satellite was also in its detailed planning stage, and is likely to be specified to supply both broadcasting as well as bandwidth for data.

TSB has carved out a valuable DTH niche for itself in Central and Eastern Europe. Halsaa says that the growth of DTH and high-definition services continues in the region.
