ARD starts YouTube channel
German public broadcaster ARD has launched its own channel on video portal YouTube.
The free offer, contains compilations from ARD’s programme schedule covering areas such as current news, politics, information, entertainment, knowledge and education. More than 100 videos are already available, with more to be added daily. ARD will thereby make use of content already offered on its proprietary on-demand services.
With its presence on YouTube, which is administered by ARD affiliate station Südwestrundfunk (SWR), ARD hopes to reach new, young target groups. SWR director-general Peter Boudgoust, who became ARD’s chairman in January, first hinted the public broadcaster’s aspiration to join YouTube in August 2008. Fellow public broadcaster ZDF has had its own channel on the Google-owned platform since November 2007.
