E-Vision goes High Def

Etisalat-owned cable company E-Vision is launching what it describes as the region’s first “full” HDTV service. Humaid Rashid Sahoo, E-vision’s CEO, made the announcement at Dubai’s CabSat show. However, all is not quite what it appears.

The Middle East, despite its wealth and prosperity and enthusiasm for flat panel TV sets, has been a slow adopter of HDTV (see separate story today on HDTV) and this is reflected in E-Vision’s overall offerings. Because it is an aggregator of other people’s channels there is little it can do itself to push HD because there isn’t any HD to push!

But it is backing Abu Dhabi Media Company’s (ADMC) coverage of local soccer in the shape of the UAE’s premier league matches that ADMC will capture in high definition.

“The launch of the HD service is a significant milestone for us and will allow our customers to experience and enjoy all the benefits that high definition represents such as image quality and great sound,” said Sahoo. “We are working on expanding our HD content base even further and look forward to [providing] additional HD content in the coming months.”
