17.7m broadband households in France
The number of French households subscribing to broadband internet reached 17.7 million at the end of December 2008. Most of them, 16.8 million, have an ADSL service, according to figures from telecom regulatory body Arcep.
Over one year, the number of broadband consumers rose by 14%, with 2.2 million new households, including 560,000 in the last four months of 2008.
Other types of broadband access, apart from the majority ADSL, are cable, fiber and DTH.
Despite maket shares won by alternative operators Free and SFR-Neuf Cegetel, Orange still leads the market with a share that almost reaches 50%. The operator claimed 8.3 million broadband clients at the end of 2008. Free followed with 4.2 million subs and SFR-Neuf Cegetel with 3.9 million.
