Swiss cable growth through triple play

Swiss cable operators recorded growing interest in triple play services in 2008. The number of internet customers increased in comparison with the previous year by 5% to 746,000, while the number of telephony customers grew by 10% to 350,000, industry association Swisscable announced in Bern.

The number of digital TV customers increased by 27% to 510,000 households. However, with a share of 18% of the altogether 2.9 million cable customers, the portion of digital households remains small. “The analogue offer in Switzerland is certainly very good, therefore transition to digital-TV takes place slowly,” said Swisscable president Hajo Leutenegger.

The exact number of HDTV households is not known. “We do, however, know that around every third person who is now changing to digital cable television also subscribes to HDTV,” said Leutenegger, adding that high definition television was therefore an important propeller for digitalisation.

Leutenegger called on cable companies to increase their efforts to clarify to their customers what cable networks have to offer. “While other providers are obliged to build fibre optic networks, the capabilities of cable networks are far from being exhausted.” Through technical upgrades, internet data rates of more than 100 Mbit/s are possible, he said. “We must make more use of this potential.”
