Keane plays for live Sky 3D test

Sky has successfully broadcast its first live event in the 3D TV format. A live performance of the band Keane was transmitted to existing Sky+ HD boxes for display on a 3D TV set.

The broadcast was part of a 3D music event co-produced by Sky, specialist 3D production company Nineteen Fifteen Productions and Island Records. A live webcast of the gig was also seen on Keaneís website.

The 3D transmission took place at Londonís Abbey Road studios and was broadcast over a high definition satellite transponder and displayed on a 46 inch HD TV screen. An invited audience was able to view the live transmission in the Abbey Road studio next door to the gig.

Traditional Red/Green glasses were distributed to Keane fans ahead of the gig, while Sky uses polarisation technology.

Sky continues to emphasises that it is not planning an immediate product launch. It is however working with TV manufacturers, broadcasters, studios and other content owners to assess the viability of such a service.
