SES Astra close to expansion

Chris Forrester

Rapid TV News understands that SES Astra is close to making a major expansion announcement.

We understand that Luxembourg-based SES Astra has been involved in talks with Abu Dhabi-based YahSat, and an announcement may be imminent.

YahSat is the name given to two satellites under construction on behalf of the Al Yah Satellite Communications Company, YahSat, to create a new company that will offer DTH television and services to more than two dozen countries in the Middle East, North Africa and South West Asia, a large region mainly including the Gulf states and the Maghreb.

YahSat is owned by Mubadala, the investment arm of the Government of Abu Dhabi. The number of TV households in Middle East and North Africa is estimated at 265m, with direct satellite reach counting for 85% of viewing.
