Russian pay-TV market reaches 19.3mn at end-2008

There were 19.3mn subscribers to pay-TV services in Russia by the end of 2008, according to a new report from Russian firm iKS-Consulting, with a market volume estimated at US$ 970mn.

Cable dominates the local market with an 80% share in terms of subscribers, followed by satellite with 19%, and IPTV coming in a distant last in terms of subscribers with a 1% market share. In terms of revenue, cable held 65% of the Russian pay-TV market, while satellite accounted for 33% and IPTV accounted for 2%.

iKS-Consulting adds that the Russian pay-TV market is marked by high concentration - the ten largest operators account for 80% of the total amount of subscribers. Market leader in terms of revenues is the satellite operator NTV+.

There were over 4.5mn subscribers to digital TV services by the end of 2008, according to iKS-Consulting, with the digital TV market contended by 30 operators.
