TeliaSonera adds 32k IPTV subs in Q1
Nordic telco TeliaSonera added 32,000 IPTV subscribers in the first quarter of this year across all its markets, including 9,000 new customers in Sweden alone, to reach a total of 509,000.
The company reports that more than 20% of its broadband customers, which numbered 2.3mn by last March, now subscribe to its IPTV services. It adds that it has strengthened its market position in IPTV during the quarter, particularly in the Baltic countries but also in Sweden, where it tripled its revenues from IPTV services compared to the first quarter of 2008, although it "could not fully compensate" for the decline in traditional fixed-voice services and equipment sales.
“The macroeconomic environment worsened during the first quarter and although the telecom services industry has been less affected than other industries there are signs of changed customer behavior in several of our markets," said Lars Nyberg, President and CEO of TeliaSonera. "Still, we were able to grow net sales for the group in local currencies and our efforts to reduce operational expenditures successfully improved our margins and cash flow compared to last year. I am especially pleased with the developments within Broadband Services where the margin improved considerably from the fourth quarter."
Overall net sales across all operations and markets for the first quarter of this year rose 11.5% year-on-year to reach SEK 27.204bn (US$ 3.32bn), while net income rose 1% by the same comparison to reach SEK 5.018bn.
